Heartwood Nuclear Engineering

Independent engineering and licensing strategy for nuclear power.

Heartwood Nuclear Engineering advises operating nuclear plants and emerging small modular reactor projects on the engineering decisions that move a project through the NRC's review and the operating decisions that keep a plant on the grid. We are an engineering firm; we do not own or operate plants.

Operating Plant Engineering

License-amendment requests, 50.59 evaluations, and design-basis-document maintenance for operating PWR and BWR fleets. The work that operating engineers ask for help with when the regulator is on the calendar.

SMR Licensing Strategy

Pre-application engagement with the NRC for advanced reactor designs. Combined-license application support. Topical-report strategy.

Probabilistic Risk Assessment

Internal and external events PRA, including update support for operating plants and de novo PRA construction for new reactor designs.

Posture

Heartwood staffs senior engineers who came up through utility nuclear engineering, NRC technical staff roles, and the engineering organizations of major nuclear-services firms. Programs are led by senior practice leads from kickoff through closeout.

Compliance

Heartwood operates in alignment with 10 CFR Part 50 and Part 52 requirements, including documented quality assurance procedures aligned with NQA-1 where the engagement requires it. We do not transmit safeguards information outside the United States.

Where we work

Engineering is consolidated at our office in Knoxville. On-site work is performed at customer plants under the customer's site access procedures.
